Chapter Thirteen

My (Crazy) Plan in action

Charles looked at Aurora and moved his hands around in a weird way. Aurora nodded and closed her eyes and concentrated. She soon opened her eyes and did the cutting-head-off-with-your-hand motion and stuck her tongue out.

That was the motion that means he wants to kill us.

Yikes.

I pointed to her and then pointed to the back window. She nodded.

Aurora walked over to the window and opened it. George appeared at the window. I saw her lean closer to him and whisper something. He nodded and disappeared in an orange blur. Carla looked through the peephole, looked at me, and nodded.

She slowly opened the door and walked out, holding the door open for me and closed it when I was outside.

As soon as I stepped out, I saw the blur of orange again. The sorcerer was blasting a lightning bolt out of his magic wand at it.

“Don’t worry,” Carla whispered. “George’s super-speed also makes him psychic. He can tell when something, or things, is about to hit him. He’ll never get blasted.”

The blur came towards us. George appears as soon as the blur stops. Carla points her hand at the sorcerer, took a deep breath, and slowly lifted her hand up.

The sorcerer started to go up too. Carla started to move her hand in weird patterns. The sorcerer started to spin around. “AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” he screamed. “MAKE IT STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!”

“Not until you tell us who you are, and why you want to kill us!” Carla commanded.

“I’m Quincy Warlock!” he screamed. “I want to kill you because I want to prevent Morgan and Austin from going home!”

He’s talking about me and Aurora!

“If they don’t get home, they’ll be stuck here forever! And I need more people with powers! The more I have, the more power I can use for myself!” he said evilly.

I stepped forward. “You selfish, little….” I couldn’t say anything mean, even if he deserved it. Instead, I nodded at Carla. She lowered her arm slowly, then FLUNG her arm up as hard as she could.

Quincy Warlock was thrown up really high. I concentrated on him and pictured the dungeon Liz showed me a picture of earlier. Quincy was about an inch from the ground when disappeared in a swirl of pink.

Carla, George, and I stood in silence.

Aurora, Liz, and Charles came out to join us.

I still couldn’t believe it.

“We did it.” I said, out of breath.

Chapter Fourteen

Good-Bye

After taking a LOOOOOOONG nap, a snack (with yummy cookies!) and a game, it was time to say good-bye. We promised we would visit again. I took my metal detector, and we were on our way. Bobby the dragon waved good-bye too.

Aurora and I were on our way….

….home.

Chapter Fifteen

Oh.

“Here it is!” I said when my metal detector started beeping rapidly.

Aurora and I moved the cloud-ground thing and saw the rock/portal. We were just about to step in the portal when we heard a voice.

“Alexia! Aurora! Waaaaaaaaaaaait!”

We spun around to see Carla running towards us.

“What is it?” I asked.

“We figured out why you brought the metal detector to school!” she said to me.

“Why?”

“Sorcerers can trick minds. He MADE you bring it to school!”

“Why today?” Aurora and I asked.

“You are only allowed to enter the portal if you are at least ten.”

“It was my tenth birthday yesterday!” I exclaimed.

“But mine was in September,” said Aurora. “How come I wasn’t let in until yesterday?”

“You walked Alexia home from school,” said Carla. “You never actually came in contact with the portal until yesterday.”

“Oh.”

I suddenly realized something. “We were gone for a whole day! Our parents must be worried SICK!”

Carla laughed. “Don’t worry! Every day here is a minute there! You’ve been here for a day and a half! That means you only lost 1 ½ minutes back in your world!”

I couldn’t believe it! Aurora and I left at precisely 12:30 and 13 seconds today since it was a half day. That means it is 12:31 and 43 seconds at home!

“You should go,” said Carla.

We nodded and stepped in the portal.

Chapter Sixteen

Home, Sweet Home

Rainbows again. Aurora and I swirled through the portal. And everything went black. Again.

__________

I opened my eyes and saw a familiar place. The school. My school. My hometown. The clock on the wall of the school said 12:31.

“We made it!” Aurora said.

Our bags were still on the ground. I went to mine (careful not to step on the portal) and looked inside.

My phone was still in there. I grabbed it and turned it on.

3 messages from Mom. 1 from dad. 5 from my friend, Lucy. The date?

November 22.

My tenth birthday. Even the year was right. Only a minute had past. We could still make it home.

Aurora and I decided that she didn’t need to walk me home, so we parted ways and walked home.

My 8-year-old sister, Madison, met me at the school playground where we always meet. Maddie gave me her cute smile and said, “You are 2 minutes and 7.692 seconds late.”

I smiled. Maddie and I both got watches with timers, stopwatches, and a bunch of other cool stuff. It would let us know how late we were. Maddie and I were always waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to precise.

“Come on,” I said. “Let’s go home.”

__________

When we got home, I had enough of adventures, so I fell asleep.

Chapter Seventeen

Afterwards

My birthday was a HUGE success. Aurora, Lucy, and I had a blast! Even Maddie had fun with us. After they went home the next morning, I found a letter on my bed.

Dear Alexia,

I forgot to mention that your sister can go through the portal if she wears a special necklace under your pillow. Anyone younger than 10 with powers can enter the portal if they wear one.

Your Friend,

Carla Ashley Randall

I looked under my pillow and I saw a bunch of necklaces with 5 pearls on the end. I bet Maddie would love one.

__________

I gave Maddie a necklace after the party. She loved it.

__________

When we got to the school on Monday, I saw Aurora walking with her 7-year-old brother, Mikey, who was also wearing necklace. Maddie’s friend, Nellie came running up to us.

“Wow! That’s a pretty necklace, Maddie!” said Nellie.

“Alexia gave it to me,” said Maddie.

“A friend gave a bunch to us,” I said as Aurora and Mikey walked up to us.

“I have one too!” Mikey showed off his necklace.

“Do you want one, Nellie?” I asked.

She nodded.

I reached in my bag, took a necklace out and handed it to her. I knew only people with powers could go through the portal, but Nellie wanted one and I had a lot.

“Thanks!”

Nellie, Maddie, and Mikey skipped ahead.

Aurora and I started to talk about our adventure in the portal when we heard a scream.

Maddie and Mikey were staring at the portal. Nellie was gone. Her bag was the only thing left with the name Nellie Newman on it. Maddie and Mikey looked at each other, smiled, and jumped in after her.

Nellie made it in. That means she has powers. What are they?

Aurora and I sat on the grass, and waited for their return.

The Secret Portal, Draft Two is interesting. It's better than Draft One, but harder to read, if I'm being honest. I spent a really long time planning this one, and it's so different from what it is now. But it's still a fundamental part of the growth of this series.

And there are somehow three more of these. Stay tuned!
