SOTL Draft Two/MAGIC - Ch9
Well this chapter is going to be fun!
Chapter 9
When Marlis went to breakfast the next morning, she made no mention to Cheryl about what Rosario had told her. In her self-defense class she sat and listened to Spencer’s lesson on how one could be in danger and need this knowledge.
Even in ballroom, as they practiced curtsying, Marlis never even made eye contact with Rosario. There was no way she would let Cheryl or Citra find out about her conversation with Anahi Rosario.
Cheryl noticed. “You’re acting strange,” she said while Professor Whitney was giving instructions.
“I’m just listening to the professor,” Marlis whispered as she bent down in a deep curtsy.
Cheryl snorted. “Don’t tell me you don’t know how to curtsy,” and she bent down in a quick curtsy.
“Miss Desrosiers, that was sloppy,” Whitney snapped. “As princess of Francera, I expected more.”
“Sorry, Professor,” Cheryl muttered, and did the curtsy again, though her blue eyes were glowing with annoyance.
Whitney noticed, but probably realized Cheryl was a waste of time, so ignored her. “So, I’ve assigned you partners. New ones. By the end of the semester, you will have worked with everyone.” She started to name off partners. Marlis patiently waited for her name. Cheryl was paired with a girl named Olivia, and Citra with one named Mary.
“Marlis Haggard and Anahi Rosario.”
Crap, Marlis thought. She made eye contact with Anahi, and the hazel-eyed princess looked equally annoyed, if not more. They stalked towards each other as Whitney kept reading off the names.
Marlis put on her cover. “So we meet again, Rosario.”
“Pleasure’s all mine, Haggard,” Anahi said, face showing no emotion.
“Now,” said Whitney, “as this is the second day, we won’t be learning anything complicated, and we’ll learn the basics of the routine we’ll be dancing with the guys after the quarter next week. So let’s practice the duo girl’s routine we’ll perform in October.
Marlis stared into Anahi’s hazel eyes. “Ready, Rosario?”
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Anahi stared back.
“Okay,” said Whitney. “First, curtsy.”
Marlis and Anahi curtsied, not breaking eye contact with each other.
“Step to the right and curtsy again.”
The two princesses followed the rest of the routine, never once breaking the magnets that held their eyes together. Even the final curtsey, where they were supposed to bow their head wasn’t enough to destroy it.
“Wonderful, girls,” said Whitney as the bell rang. “You may all go! Except Anahi and Marlis, I need to speak with you.”
Ugh, Marlis thought. More time with Anahi Rosario? What a nightmare!
Grudgingly, the two girls walked to the professor.
“I noticed some tension between the two of you,” said Whitney. “What’s going on?”
Anahi opened her mouth to speak, but Marlis interjected. “We didn’t want to mess up. We were just looking in each other’s eyes and daring each other not to mess up. It was a dare to not break eye contact whenever possible between us and our other roommate.”
Whitney nodded. “I see. Well, next time, dares are overpowered by my instructions. Understand?”
“Yes, ma’am,” said Marlis, while Anahi nodded, still staring at her.
“Good. You may head to your next class.”
Marlis turned around and walked as quickly as she could toward the door, avoiding eye contact with Anahi now. But Anahi stopped her in the hall.
“What was that?” Anahi snapped.
“You’re welcome,” Marlis muttered.
“Don’t give me that, Haggard! I know that you were just covering for yourself!”
“What would I be covering for?” Marlis asked. “I was saving both of us from a lecture!”
“You know, next time, when trying to save someone else, just tell the truth. It will be a lot easier that way.”
Marlis watched Anahi stalk off. She sighed. She was just trying to help. Now she was starting to regret the rudeness she gave off the other day. Next time she’d be more careful.
But it was too late for Anahi Rosario.\
Woooo that was a lot of tension between Marlis and Anahi wasn't it? See this is what I meant by the two of them having weird tension with each other. This wasn't intentional on my part, but if I were to have written this today, this would have been an enemies to friends to lovers arc, since I was already planning the enemies to friends by the end of the book.
And they were roommates.
