SOTL Draft Two/MAGIC - Ch5

Writer's picture: Kaylin AlexanderKaylin Alexander

This is basically a filler chapter, but it also features Anahi being very judgmental.

Chapter 5

Anahi tried not to get claustrophobic as she walked toward the dining area. The giant dining areas, Anahi noted as she remembered Audrey's tour earlier today.

The halls were so crowded with girls in pretty dresses, Anahi wanted to get sick. Was there anyone else at this school that didn't care about looking "pretty"?

Anahi stepped inside the dining area, which was crowded with girls fighting to find a spot at one of the extremely long tables. Anahi surveyed her surroundings. She didn't see Ryan anywhere, but she saw Katya Zima- Frost sitting by herself, staring silently at her empty plate. Anahi walked over.

"Hey, Katya," she said. "Remember me?"

Katya looked up. Now that she wasn't wearing a giant hoodie, Anahi could finally see what she looked like. She had short, choppy, pale blonde hair that fell into her blue eyes that were lined with violet eye shadow. She wore an ice-blue dress that was connected to a cerulean hood. She was very pretty.

"Of course," said Katya. "It was only a few hours ago."

Anahi laughed awkwardly. "Yeah.... Uh, can I sit here?"

"Uh, sure," said Katya. As Anahi sat down, Katya’s hands shot up. "Just don't touch me!"

"Uh, okay..." Anahi said, now noticing Katya was wearing elbow-length gloves. Germaphobe.

The sprites flew around a few seconds later, placing plates, and plates, and plates of food on the tables.

Anahi looked at the meal in front of her. It looked so wonderful. Smiling, she looked up at Katya, but she was just looking down at her lap.

"What's wrong?" Anahi asked.

"Nothing," Katya murmured.

The two princesses ate in an awkward silence until a voice piped up behind them.

"Is this seat taken?"

Anahi turned around to see a girl with short brown hair and brown eyes. "No, it's not."

The girl sat down next to her. She held out her hand, which Anahi shook. "Linn Charming."

"Anahi Rosario,” Anahi said, noting that Linn’s accent was similar to Audrey’s. Probably also Englandan.

Linn looked over at Katya as if she expected her to answer. "Katya Zima-Frost," she said, shyly. "'Charming' as in C.H.A.R.M.?"

Linn smiled. "Yes. My grandfather is the founder. Actually, my brother Edwin started there this year, too."

"You have a brother?" Anahi asked.

Linn nodded. "Yeah. He's older by three minutes, for your information. It's actually annoying. People seem to think of him as the 'big brother', though it's not really the case."

"I have a younger brother," said Katya. "Kliment. He'll start C.H.A.R.M. next year."

"Do you have any siblings, Anahi?" Linn asked.

Anahi shook her head. "I wish I did, though. It got really lonely pretty quickly. I never saw my parents, except for dinner, and then they annoyed the crap out of me. M.A.G.I.C. finally gave me a chance to socialize with other people."

Linn nodded. "Don't worry, Anahi. You'll make friends here."

Anahi smiled. "I sure hope so."

All talking ceased in the room as the voice of Holly Stone rang through the air. "Can I have your attention, please? Thank you. Welcome to the first dinner of the year!"

Cheers erupted from the crowd.

"While we're all here," Holly continued, "let's go over the schedule for the meals. Breakfast is delivered to you on weekends only. On weekdays, breakfast is served here from 6 to 8, which is when we start classes. You will each have assigned lunch times, and dinner is served at the same time as today. There will be a bell, just like today."

Holly stopped talking when another woman ran up to her. She whispered something in her ear, then she was gone. Holly smiled at the crowd. "We want to warn you about using magic without permission. We have had extreme cases of that here in the cafeteria. We had a giant pumpkin once." Holly laughed, though no one else did.

"Well, I hope you all have a great semester. Remember, breakfast from 6 to 8. We will ring the bell at exactly 8 o'clock for first period. See you tomorrow!"

I don't think it was my intention to make Anahi as judgmental as she is, but if I was writing this today, it probably would have been an intentional character flaw that she'd learn to overcome over the course of the book.
