Short Story Excerpt: TEOS: The Search for the Ruby Necklace - Ch2

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

In the original fanfic, there was a page that kinda went over the same thing, but most of it is new. Annika is a new character who I don't think was terribly necessary.

Chapter Two

Old Friends and New Friends

When the school bus got to Christy’s stop, she was surprised that Dave, Adeline, and Trish got off with her.

“You guys live around here?” she asked.

They nodded.

As it turned out, Dave lived on Elm Street, just around the corner from Christy, Adeline lived on Oak Street, just two streets away, and Trish lived on Sycamore, right across the street!

As Christy walked to her house, she thought about her new friends. Trish, Adeline, and Dave reminded her so much of Annika.

Christy’s mom, Jane, looked up from cleaning the dishes. She smiled and said, “Hi, sweetie! How was your first day?”

Christy shrugged. “It was OK, but I made three friends….”

Jane gasped. “Honey, that’s wonderful! Three friends on your first day!”

*****

Yes. No. True. False. A. B. C….

Christy sat in her room doing her science homework. She sighed. Today had been her fifth day of school, Friday, and she had weekend homework. Of course, Christy didn’t mind. She liked school, and she liked homework. But she was thinking about what Trish said.

“Christy! I want to show you something tomorrow!” she had said. “I think you’ll like it!”

So Christy said sure, and Trish had given her her phone number.

Now, Christy looked at the piece of paper with Trish’s phone number. She finished her science homework and got up and walked into the living room.

Her mom was on the phone.

“Yes, Courtney,” she was saying. “Christy did have a good time.” She paused. “That’s wonderful.” Pause. “Yeah, Christy’s spring break is two weeks from now.” Pause. “Tuesday sounds great!” Pause. “OK, bye, Courtney.” She hung up. She turned to Christy. “Great news! Annika’s coming over this spring break!”

Christy gasped and smiled. Then she remembered what she was going to tell her. “Mom,” she said. “Can I call Trish? She wants to show me something tomorrow.”

Jane smiled. “Of course, but isn’t she right across the street?”

“Yes,” said Christy. “Thanks, for letting me go.”

Christy went back to her room, grabbed her cellphone, and dialed Trish’s number.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Trish,” said Christy. “Mom said-“

“Christy!” Trish interrupted. “So I’ll be at your house at 10:00.”

“Sounds good,” said Christy, smiling that Trish assumed it was a yes before she even said it. “See you tomorrow!” Christy hung up just as she got a text. It was from Annika!

Christy!!!!!!! I heard u like ur new school! Glad 2 hear that ur making new friends!!!! I made 1 2!!! Her name is Lily.

Christy was glad to hear that her friend was making new friends. So she texted:

Glad 2 hear ur making new friends 2! My friends r Dave, Adeline, & Trish. I’m going 2 go somewhere w/ Trish 2morrow!

Annika texted:

Awesome!!!!!! Glad 2 hear it!!!!!

Christy put her phone down. She was going to miss Annika, but at least they would see each other on spring break!

That was uneventful! Hopefully tomorrow's chapter will be more fun.
