Well, according to how I posted them, I should be posting excerpts from my fantasy short story. However, that one was handwritten, and I haven't gotten around to transcribing it just yet. Will be doing that soon, though.
For now, I'm talking about Next Thursday Morning, a book I started writing in eighth grade. It's... not that good, if I'm being honest. But alas, I've been posting my old works, so here it is.
Chapter One
I woke up like every other day.
Tired, groggy, and just plain miserable.
I’m not a morning person.
But this morning was different. I had the whole house to myself for a whole week. My parents were in Africa on a dumb business trip.
And they decided to leave their sixteen-year-old daughter home alone.
But hey, at least it’s summer vacation and I can stay home!
I pushed myself out of bed. Ugh. I hate this.
I glanced at the clock on my nightstand. 10:30am. Really? It feels so much earlier!
I stared at myself in the mirror. I looked the same as yesterday--short, strawberry blond hair, dark blue eyes, small figure--only with bedhead. And blurry. I reached for the black glasses on my stand. My friend Kelli calls them my “nerd glasses”. And I don’t want to be stereotypical, but I am a nerd.
I trudged down the stairs to the living room. I collapsed onto the couch.
“Good morning, Tiffany,” my family’s computer, Indigo, said.
Even though Indigo was a computer whose voice sounded throughout the house, she never spoke to me in my room, unless I asked her something. “Good morning, is an oxymoron,” I muttered.
“Oxymoron, noun, a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction.”
“Thanks,” I muttered, reaching over for my Holo- Phone.
I opened it up, and the holographic screen appeared. Property of Tiffany Isaac it read. Under that, a new message from my friend, Kelli Peterson. I tapped on it to read the message.
Hey, you up yet?
I groaned. The message was from 8am. How can she get up that early.
Now I am
About time!
Can I come over later?
I looked down at my pajamas. It would take me awhile to get ready.
How about at 1?
Sure!
I shut the HoloPhone and set it down. “Indigo, what’s the temperature?”
“The forecast for today, Friday, June 8th, 2063, is partly-cloudy weather with a high of 82 degrees, and a low of 74 degrees.”
After hearing the weather, I grabbed a banana for breakfast and went back up to my room to get ready. Even though Kelli wasn’t coming for another hour and a half, I had to be ready.
***
I picked out a shirt with purple and pink stripes and black leggings. Just casual. Nothing special.
I looked into the mirror. My strawberry-blond hair fell in small waves down to my chin. I guess I’m pretty, in a different way, though I’m not sure it’s noticeable.
“Kelli Peterson is at the door,” said Indigo.
“Let her in,” I said, coming down the stairs.
The front door opened to reveal Kelli. Kelli has dark black hair, bright blue eyes, and a pale complexion. She’s known at school as “the pretty girl who hangs out with the nerd”.
“Hey, Tiff!” she said, rushing in the door and giving me a hug.
“Hey, Kel,” I said, struggling to breathe. I’ve never really been one for physical touch, but no matter how many times I tell her, she will always give me a big embrace.
“I have some exciting news!” Kelli exclaimed, breaking away. “Jason asked me out!”
“Good for you!” I said. Jason has been Kelli’s crush for a while, and even though many guys want to date Kelli, I’m glad she actually got someone. “Hey, do you want to have a snack?”
“Sure,” said Kelli. “I haven’t eaten anything since…” she trailed off. Then she said into her watch, “Hey, Piper, when was the last time I’ve eaten?”
“The last time you ate was 11am,” said Kelli’s computer, Piper.
I rolled my eyes. “Two hours ago? I only had a banana.”
Kelli smiled. “Well, I am always hungry.”
“Help yourself,” I said, gesturing towards the kitchen.
Kelli turned to go into the kitchen, but then stopped. “Hey, Tiff, where are your glasses?”
My hands went up to my face. How did I not notice? Without saying anything, I ran upstairs to my room.
I burst through the door and ran to my glasses on my night stand. I put them on and sighed in relief. I turned to leave when I heard a noise. I slowly turned around to see where it was coming from. I gasped.
The mirror was swirling.
Well this opening is pretty mid. Again, I'm not super proud of this one.
