Chapter Nine

Walking in a Winter Crazyland

“Take that!” I yelled as I threw a snowball at Mikey.

He squealed like a 5-year-old girl as the snowball hit him.

For a good 5 minutes, we had completely forgotten ourselves in playing in the snow. Since Dallas barley had snow, this was probably the most fun I’d ever had outside.

Of course, when we built a small snowman, I looked through my bag for a carrot. Inside the bag, was a picture of Maddie, Kat, and me. We were all smiling at the camera and hugging. The background told me that we were on a bus-probably on a field trip.

I stared at the picture and started to cry. What were we doing?! Mikey and I should be looking for our friends, not playing! Plus, we were in normal time, now. Time was passing in Dallas at the same rate as Chicago. Well, we were crazy enough to forget about that, and the world was also crazy with all the sorcerers and enchantresses running around.

“Mikey,” I said. “We need to find our friends!”

Chapter Ten

All across the Country

Finding Alexia’s phone number was easy. (Maddie gave me her sister’s phone number so I could call her on my house phone.) Now finding a phone, that was the hard part. I didn’t have my house phone and I didn’t have a cell phone.

Finally, I found a phone in a corner store. I quickly dialed Alexia’s number.

“Hello?”

“Alexia! It’s Nellie!”

“Nellie! Is Maddie there?”

“No, Mikey’s here. Is Aurora there?”

“Yes, actually!”

I handed the phone to Mikey and he and his sister talked for what seemed like forever. My eyes started tearing up and I started to miss my 6-year-old sister, Isabel. I wondered what she was doing. I thought I would be teleported to my house immediately or Isabel would appear, but nothing happened. Apparently, Ronnie and Bonnie took our powers away. Of course! I couldn’t control my teleportation powers, but when I need them, I don’t have them! I couldn’t even do a force-field!

When Mikey got off the phone, I asked Alexia if she knew where everyone else was.

“I only know where Maddie is. I texted Lucy and she’s in Trenton, New Jersey with Maddie. By the way, Aurora and I are in Cincinnati, Ohio.”

“Mikey and I are in Chicago, Illinois.”

“Wow. I wonder where everyone else is.”

“Me, too.”

I said good-bye to Alexia and turned to Mikey. He was staring at his Spider-Man backpack in shock.

“What is it?” I asked.

He pulled out 3 notes. “Carla, Charles, Liz, and George sent these to us!”

“How do they do that?” I asked.

He shrugged. He unfolded one. It said:

Dear Madison and Michael,

This is Carla and Charles! We’re in Las Angeles, California. If you couldn’t read that, it said Las Angeles, California. Carla’s handwriting is too curly. Anyway, we sent a copy of this note to everybody. You need to head to the nearest elementary school. Ronald made a little mistake. He accidently dropped all of us off 5 miles from a portal to Cloud Town! In case you were wondering, all portals to Cloud Town are at elementary schools. When you get to Cloud Town, find your way back to our house!

So, OK. Nearest elementary school is in 5 miles. Great. Which way? IDK!

Apparently Mikey read my mind (not literally, he never had mind-reading powers), because he said, “The other 2 notes might tell us where to go.

He was right. He unfolded the second note. It said:

Dear Madison and Michael,

This is George and Hannah. We are in Albuquerque, New Mexico. You will need to head west to the nearest elementary school.

Sincerely,

George and Hannah

P. S. In case you don’t know, there is a portal to the nearest elementary school. West is the direction of the sunset, FYI.

OK, so….

Step 1: Find west

Step 2: Go west for 5 miles

Step 3: Find the portal at the elementary school

Step 4: Find Liz and Charles’ house

We had one more note. It must be from Liz.

Mikey unfolded the last note. It said:

Dear Maddie and Mikey,

This is Liz and Kathleen. When you get this note, you probably have gotten two other notes.

This is Kat. In case you were wondering we found that out by SUPER-NET!!! Isn’t Super-net AWESOME!!!

Yes, well, we wanted to let you know that when you get to Cloud Town, find the Rainbow Bridge. When you do, cross to the center of the bridge, and recite this:

“Rainbow Bridge, Rainbow Bridge,

I want to go somewhere. Where?

Rainbow Bridge, Rainbow Bridge,

The Gray’s house, that’s where!”

P. S. We are in Indianapolis, Indiana! Just in case you were wondering, it is SNOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Step 4: Find Liz and Charles’ house the Rainbow Bridge

Step 5: Recite chant

Step 5: Go to Liz and Charles’ house

Step 6: Go home!

It felt weird to know that your friends and family are all around the country.

It's actually not that weird because I have many friends and family around the country. Many people do, in fact.
