This chapter is exactly the same in both versions of the draft. That makes it easier for me!

Chapter Eight

November 22nd* Time: no idea!

Place: Still the same cell

Madison

Human Experiments

Take a wild guess who the first person to be experimented on was. Come on! You have a 331/3% chance to get it right!

Answer: Me.

Oh, joy! I’m out of the cell! But Willie is taking me to a special room specially designed for special people to be specially experimented on for a special purpose for a special reason.

His words, not mine.

I’ll let you know that I used to love math, but now these percentages will show you why I hate it so much.

The room was 80% computer, 1% chair, 4% tables, 10% cables and 2% paper. He set me in one of the chairs. Wait, “set” isn’t the word… What’s the word? Oh, yeah, it’s FORCEFULLY SHOVED AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD INTO A CHAIR!

“Let me go!” I screamed, kicking at him as hard as I could, but he just strapped me down in the chair.

“Let’s see what you can do,” said William, “and what your limits are.”

He pulled out a needle from his pocket. He injected me in the arm.

I screamed. I mean, I’ve had a needle draw out blood before, but this hurt worse for some reason.

William smiled at the needle, now with blood, and walked beside the chair and did a few stuff on the computers.

What was probably hours later, William stood aside from the computer. “Fascinating,” he said. “I knew what you could do, but I didn’t know how! Your cells can take shape of over 500 different species.”

I honestly had no idea what he meant, but I didn’t feel like asking.

I was surprised when he left, then returned with Mikey. He performed the same procedure on him that he did on me. After a few hours, he patted Mikey on the shoulder. “Well done,” he said. “You can be in abnormally high temperatures—far more than any I could imagine. You should become a firefighter.”

When he left for Kelsey, I turned to Mikey. “What do you think he’s talking about?”

Mikey shrugged. “He’s talking about us like we’re superheroes.”

I thought about what William said. “What if we are?”

Before Mikey could answer, William dragged in a very angry Kelsey. I had known her since second grade, but I’d never seen her this angry. She was practically glowing with anger.

“Stop fighting me!” William demanded. “It’s futile!”

“I don’t care!” Kelsey screamed. She kept struggling and his grip soon released her. She ran away from him, and across the room where Mikey and I were strapped down.

William reached in his box and pulled out an ice blue powder. He opened the cap and through some in Kelsey’s direction. She turned around and put her hand up to block it.

But instead of hitting her, a black cloud-thing shot out of her hand. The powder disappeared. Her blonde hair was flying behind her in a way that made it look like flames. When she turned around, her eyes weren’t blue, they were black. There wasn’t even a white in her eyes. The way her glasses reflected them seemed to make her even scarier. She stayed that way for a moment until she collapsed.

William smiled wickedly. “Well, I’d like to see how that works!”

The wizard scooped her up and tied her to the remaining chair. He attached everything to her and went about with the taking the blood thing.

I turned to Mikey, who looked a little scared. After what we just saw, I think I’d believe anything.

If Kelsey had powers, would Mikey and I have powers? I wasn’t sure, but I knew I couldn’t test it out now.

I would have to wait for the right moment.

*I actually forgot to add the year here for Version 2.

Maddie's narration here is very different because I hadn't nailed character voice yet. This reads a little like Kelsey's narration in Draft Four.
