Chapter 2

If one said M.A.G.I.C. was amazing, it would be an understatement.

Anahi tried to see everything in the castle, but Audrey kept dragging the princess away from every mural, statue, and stone.

Soon, they arrived in the Great Hall. Anahi gasped. Fairy godmothers and princesses were filling up the giant hall. She had never seen so many people in one room.

"Good afternoon, everyone," a feminine voice said. Anahi turned to see a woman with dark hair on a stage on the other side of the hall. "I am Headmistress Holly Stone. Welcome to the Magical Academy for Girls: Intermediate Classes!"

The girls in the room cheered.

"Now, some of you have been to our beginner branch, B.L.I.N.K.," Stone continued, "but we have many new faces." She smiled at the sea of girls around her. "No worries. About half of you had tutors instead, so you should be caught up."

Anahi heard some girls breathe sighs of relief, but she started to panic. She was always falling asleep in her sessions with her tutors. Was she more behind than the others? Was she screwed for the whole year? Or all four?

"The sprites will pass out your schedules for the semester," said Stone.

Anahi looked up as small lights of all different colors started to fly down from the ceiling. She smiled in delight, all worries gone. A yellow sprite flew down to her, handing her a piece of paper. Anahi smiled at the sprite, who just waved and flew back from where they came from.

"Your fairy godmother will now lead you to your chambers."

Anahi turned to Audrey, who smiled and said, "This way to your chambers, Your Highness."

Anahi followed Audrey out of the Great Hall and down a staircase. It was hard to follow her in the crowd, but Anahi managed.

"This school is crowded," said Anahi . "I thought since it was bigger than my castle, it would be less crowded."

"That's because all of the first-years are in the north-east tower," said Audrey.

"You mean, this isn't even the whole school?"

"No," Audrey said, shaking her head. "The second, third, and fourth years are here already. They got here earlier."

Anahi yawned. She was going to have to get up this early next year? She didn't want to imagine.

When they reached the north-east tower, the crowd started to thin, going into different floors, halls, and rooms. On the fifth floor, Audrey turned down into a hallway, then stopped at the third door on the right.

"Here are your chambers," said Audrey. "You should get some rest, Anahi. You look tired."

Anahi yawned on cue. Audrey smiled one last time before she disappeared in a sprinkle of silver sparkle.

Anahi opened the door to her chambers to find three canopy beds--each the size of hers back home. A girl was sitting on one of them.

Anahi walked up to her new roommate. "Hi, I'm Anahi Rosario."

The girl turned to her. She had pale skin, dark brown hair--almost black--and forest green eyes. But like Anahi, her face was slathered in make-up. She smiled. "Hey. Ryan McGuire." She spoke with an accent that sounded like she was happy all of the time--sort of joyous. Never leaving the kingdom of Pueterica, Anahi wasn’t familiar with foreign accents.

Anahi shook Ryan’s hand. "Nice to meet you."

Ryan pointed to the middle bed. "That's yours."

Anahi looked over at the bed, thinking Ryan was just bossy, but then she saw her name engraved into the headrest in curly-cue letters.

She turned to Ryan. "Where's the bathroom?"

Ryan pointed, and Anahi ran off in that direction.

Apparently, there were three bathrooms, one for each princess. Anahi opened the door marked "Anahi" and stepped in.

The bathroom was huge, but Anahi didn't admire it. Instead, she opened a cabinet to find her things. She grabbed the makeup remover and got to work.

A few minutes later, she stepped back out. Her other roommate had arrived.

"Hi," said Anahi. "You Marlis Haggard?"

Marlis looked up from her book--a “princess appropriate” one. "Yeah. Anahi Rosario?"

Anahi nodded, almost caught off-guard by the thick and guttural accent Marlis had.

Marlis had light brown hair up in a tight bun and dark brown eyes. She wore some makeup, but not as much as Ryan.

Marlis set down her book. "I settled this with McGuire already. No talking about your parents around me. Don't tell me to let down my hair. And don't stay up past 10. I need sleep."

What kind of roommate sets a curfew?

Anahi trudged over to her bed. "Okay," she said. "But can we sleep now?"

Marlis glared at her. "Sure, Rosario. Sleep well."

I don't think setting a curfew is that bad but Marlis could have been nicer about it.
