Origins of The Secret Portal

When I was in fourth grade, I was assigned a creative writing project where I would have to write at least two pages (handwritten on notebook paper) of a fictional story told in the first person. I wanted to write about two girls, best friends, learning how to use magical powers.

The first character was my narrator, then named Alexia Redines. Then I made her best friend, Aurora Flite. I called the story The Secret Portal, and it has remained that ever since (partially because I have never come up with a better title, but, you know, it works, and gets the point across.

I call this short story "Draft One".

Draft One followed Alexia and Aurora accidentally stumbling across a portal in the lawn of their school, in which they were transported to a city in the clouds. Upon their arrival, they meet a local family--Lizzy and Ted Majg and their grandchildren, Carly and George. After a scary encounter with an evil sorcerer, Alexia and Aurora were informed that they each had a unique power: teleportation and telepathy respectively.

The six characters team up using their combined abilities to defeat the evil sorcerer.

While looking back on it, I am not entirely proud of this draft, as I find it rather "cringe," as I wrote it when I was ten. However, it has a certain charm to it that I can help but ignore, and it did spawn the series that I am working on now.
