Today, we meet Tyler Nakashima:

Tyler is an intelligent teen who always has a plan for everything. He's a dreamer who never loses sight of his vision for a better world, although he would likely self-describe as a pessimist. He embraces his intellect and his reliance on facts and his breadth of knowledge, proud of what he does and his bookworm status. He's confident that if he can accomplish anything he puts his mind to, which makes him a gifted photokinetic who also is very familiar with the science behind light, and also is very creative with his powers. He has a very serious exterior, although he has a sharp wit underneath and a good, sarcastic sense of humor. He's extremely independent, not caring about status, and, as he never second-guesses himself, may go to an extreme to prove himself right, but sometimes believes that dealing with people in general isn't worth it. He's very blunt and always wants to know what he's getting into, refusing to blindly follow anything. He's a perfectionist who uses his frustrations as a motivator to keep going, and falsely believes that he can handle anything life throws at him, but is strongly internally motivated to succeed.

Tyler is a character who I always wanted to give more to do, but it was very hard to figure out his backstory. When drafting Part Three of The Secret Portal, I came up with a backstory that I thought worked, and ended up word-vomiting onto a document for a while to get all of my thoughts out, although I realized something wasn't working, so made a relatively simple change, and suddenly it worked better. However, as I soon realized was a common Draft Four problem, the backstories didn't seem to tie in to the present at all. They may help understand a character more, which is nice, but as I was struggling with a cohesive plot in general (giving more focus to character, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I needed a story), I realized I needed to tie things together. While planning out Draft Five, I have finally found a way to tie everything together, and I can't wait to develop Tyler's character even more, although I do find him a very difficult character to get in the headspace of.
