Today I'm introducing Jedidiah Moon:

Jedi is a quiet idealist who will stop at nothing to reach his goals, even if it means having to do stuff he doesn't like. He's very understanding of other's viewpoints, so often excuses their actions that he doesn't like. He's conflict-averse, which leads to more of the same problems of not wanting to speak out against others. He always has the best of intentions, is constantly stressed, and sometimes so focused on a single goal and ideal he forgets about everything else. He hates opening up about his past and problems and gravitates toward those who respect him. He's easily taken advantage of, but he is stern with those whose injustices trouble him. He often repeats mistakes he's made in the past, as he focuses more on the future rather than the present problem or past events. He is a caring individual always looking to nurture and give advice, but he comes from a conflicting place, constantly at war with two parts of himself.

Jedi was an interesting character to write. If you are familiar with my previous blog posts on earlier Drafts of The Secret Portal, you would be able to see some evolution suddenly take a turn. In Draft One, I had a villain called Warlock LV, which changed to Quincy Warlock, then Quincey Moon. Not liking the name Quincey, when Draft Four came along I changed the name to Jedi, which later became short for Jedidiah. Deciding I wanted a more complex antagonist, I focused on writing a backstory for him, but I ended up coming up with a new central antagonist and Jedi ended up just becoming a more morally gray character whose motivations completely changed, and no longer lined up with him being a direct antagonist. This role changed made him an interesting character to write for, as his kind-hearted nature didn't align with most of his actions, making him a hard character to read but a fun yet difficult character to write for.
