Character Introduction: Gwen Amante

Today, I talk about my character Gwen Amante:

Gwen is a soft-spoken and reserved girl, but she is deeply idealistic and warm person who opens up around certain people. She has a strong drive to find and fulfill her purpose in life, and sometimes becomes hyper-fixated on this to the extent that she forgets to take care of herself. She is troubled by injustice, and immediately will try to figure out a way to fix it. She's intrigued by adventure and anything out of the ordinary. She's creative and imaginative, meaning she can take her very simple power of invisibility and use it to an extremely innovative and unique degree. She's deeply understanding of others and where they are coming from, deeply empathetic toward their struggles, and is never hesitant to give her friends advice. She's a perfectionist to an extreme, and doesn't settle for "good enough," and tends to be a little stubborn when it comes to her views. She's a romantic individual who longs for deep connections, but sometimes gets overly involved in someone else's problems.

Gwen was initially conceptualized as a girl named "Andrea" or "Andy" in the second and third drafts of The Secret Portal. I changed her name to Gwen when I realized, at the time, I had too many names that started with A. I had her originally be a very shy girl, hence the invisibility, and although she's still reserved, I instead have tweaked her character to be a more active individual. When drafting the third book for The Secret Portal in Draft Four, Gwen grew into an extremely interesting character to write for, and I'm proud at how much she has evolved into her own independent character.
