Character Introduction: Ewan Traeger

Today, I introduce Ewan Traeger:

Ewan is a compassionate young man who tends to be quiet and waiting for a chance to help. He's a true dreamer who always wonders how he can do the right thing, and often becomes overwhelmed with all the things wrong with the world and those close to him. He craves self-expression, which he does in his love for composing music. He's a hopeless romantic too desperate to please others, including himself, as his perfectionist nature often gets the best of him. He craves to be alone, yet longs to connect with others, in an endless cycle of isolation. He's optimistic and sure of himself, usually neglecting to ask for help, even when he needs it. He's a teleporter who longs for a sense of purpose and adventure, but doesn't want to draw attention to himself. He sees mistakes as one-time accidents, not fretting too much about their long-term affects, and despite a highly emotional interior, is relatively good at composing himself in public.

Ewan was a character that I always wanted to give more focus, but I never could find a way to do it in Draft Four. I soon realized that I was giving him the wrong arc and looking at him the wrong way. When I started focusing on characters and their relationships with each other, I thought of different ways Ewan could interact with other characters other than the ones I already paired him up with, and while observing Ewan from different angles, I was able to see him through the eyes of characters I never thought of before, and was able to map out a nice little arc for him. In my main cast, I tried not to repeat a lot of powers, due to wanting to expose a little bit more of the world building, but I stand by teleportation being the most convenient superpower to have (a stance I've taken for the past decade), so with extra teleporters on my team, I was able to do a lot more. I don't care how statistically plausible this is because it's my world, my book, and I do what's best for the story.
