Character Introduction: Carmen Asghar

Today I introduce one of my favorite characters, Carmen Asghar:

Carmen is an extremely practical, logical, and reliable woman who is tirelessly dedicated to what she believes is her responsibility. She doesn't hold back anything, including sarcastic comments and her time and energy. She comes across as cold to most, but she has such a strong and deep loyalty that most people wouldn't find possible. She has very low patience for the impractical, and is baffled when others put their personal lives before their "duty," as she sees things. She's extremely honest and blunt and believes the ends justify the means. She hates being wrong and is very wary of trying anything new. Despite her harsh exterior, she has a tendency to blame herself whenever something goes wrong, which only makes her more bitter to everyone else around her as she hyperfocuses on fixing it. She longs to be safe, secure, and stable, even though her life rarely gives that to her. Her extremely high standards make it almost impossible to be satisfied.

Carmen was never in early Drafts of The Secret Portal, although looking back I can see where she arose. In my last blog, I discussed how Jedi Moon was originally an antagonist before I changed his character. Carmen was the same way, being Jedi's assistant, stimming from the villain known as William Nightingale in Draft Three. Like Jedi, I focused on developing Carmen's character and her backstory and came to the similar conclusion to make her a morally gray character instead. Writing her is always really fun, because she's so cynical and cross all the time but she has such a complex emotional psychology to her that I just love to unpack. She's one of my most complex characters, if not my most complex. Writing for her is a challenge, but nothing is better. The more I get down on paper, the more I love her character. Out of everyone I've written in The Secret Portal, Carmen may be the character I'm most proud of. She's such an interesting character to me, and as the series goes on, I hope most people agree.
