Character Introduction: Atsila McLain

Today, I give y'all Atsila McLain:

Atsila is a charismatic and confident woman who always strives to achieve anything she puts her mind to. She's a natural born leader, and has a clear goal and the determination to reach it. She's relentless, unforgiving, and as efficient as she can be. She's an umbrakinetic, one of the rarest powers one can be given, and uses it effectively. Her insensitivity makes it easy for her to make enemies, but her charisma is always enough to draw attention to her. She tends to be overbearing if she's trying to teach someone to do something, but she is very clear when she's communicating with someone. She can easily keep her stress under control, although she claims that stress is exactly what helps her focus and keep her motivated. She has an easy time letting go of the past, and isn't easily upset, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have the capacity. She has a high image of herself and is comfortable in her own skin.

Atsila has been an interesting character to develop. Originally, I had her named Reyna Baxter, then Reyna McLain-Baxter, then just Reyna McLain, but I soon changed her first name to Atsila in Draft Five. She was going to just be the leader of my Resistance, but I soon found myself having to develop her. In Draft Four, Reyna was almost a saint, but as I tried to develop her, I realized it would be more interesting if she wasn't. A big component of The Secret Portal is its moral greyness. I didn't want to make the line between doing the right and wrong thing that clear. People are complicated, and people tend to be put in the light of saint or devil when they were neither. So, Atsila is now a very morally gray character, and it's hard to do, but she's really interesting to write.
